John Palmer is a prominent New Zealand rock climber, developer, and access advocate. A prolific first-ascensionist known for his technical slab-climbing mastery, he has served as president of the New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC) and is the founder and former chairman of the Aotearoa Climbing Access Trust (ACAT).

As a prominent documentarian of the domestic scene, Palmer has contributed widely as a climbing writer and photographer. He is the creator of the climbing news platform powerband.org.nz across its various iterations, as well as the Powerband Podcast, an audio project archiving the history and personalities of New Zealand climbing.

Yosemite big wall pioneer and blacksmith. His hand-forged hard steel - and thus reusable - pitons were the technological breakthrough that enabled long routes to be climbed on the granite walls of Yosemite.
