Austrian mountaineer, writer, and explorer. First ascentionist of the 1938 route on the North Face of the Eiger, described in his book The White Spider. Early member of the SA and briefly pre-war member of the SS. Interned in India at the start of World War Two, his escapes to Tibet and life there are described in Seven Years in Tibet.

Best-known as a mountain, climbing and landscape photographer, Zak was a pioneer of free climbing in his native Tyrol in the early 1980s. He went on to make early repeats of hard classics notably in Patagonia and Yosemite .

Herman Buhl 1

Herman Buhl was an Austrian mountaineer most famous for his solo first ascent of Nanga Parbat in 1953 and being a member of the first team to summit Broad Peak in 1957. He died shortly after climbing Broad Peak while attempting to climb the nearby Chogolisa when he walker over a cornice in a storm triggering an avalanche which killed him.
