First amongst equals in the legendary group of Polish mountaineers that pushed Himalayan mountaineering standards in the 1970s and 1980s. After an apprenticeship in the Tatras and on large national expeditions Kurtyka became an advocate of technical alpine-style climbing on the highest peaks. His and Robert Schauer's ascent of the west face of Gasherbrum IV the Shining Wall , though not making the summit, was heralded as one of the greatest ascents of the 20th century [2]. Lifetime Piolet d'Or winner in 2016 [3].
