First ascent.

A controversial ascent as holds were chipped prior to it being climbed, though Livesey never admitted to the chipping.

Downhill Racer itself eventually received it's first ground up solo ascent from the photographer and future magazine editor Bernard Newman, who embarked on a long and epic struggle with a furious hailstorm erupting; when the hapless man called for a top rope on the increasingly insecure moves high up Bancroft's words floated forcefully up the slab to him - "You can't ask for a top rope, Bernard. You'll regret it for the rest of your life..." [1]
