Johnny attempted the route ground up in 1984 taking two sketchy falls from high on the route. Sensing that someone else might do it first, he top roped the line before leading it on a sweaty late summer evening.

Johnny attempted the route ground up in 1984 taking two sketchy falls from high on the route – saved from injury by one of his two belayers jumping off a small cliff below the route to take in slack. After a restorative beer, he set off for another go. In 1986, sensing that someone else might do it first, he top roped the line before leading it on a sweaty late summer evening.

The route had previously been climbed in two parts: the bottom half as [One Step Beyond Direct](climb/6052/one-step-beyond-direct) by [Ron Fawcett](climber/532/ron-fawcett), and the top as [Homeward Bound](/climb/6051/homeward-bound) by [Peter Beal](climber/1239/peter-beal). Johnny combined the two to complete the natural line up the middle of the wall. It masqueraded as an E7 for a decade or two, but the combination of sustained hard climbing and hard-to-place small gear led to an upgrade.
