Said to have been 8A+/B before a hold broke; unrepeated in its current state, now thought to be 8B.

The great climb in this group, however, is the hand-traverse across the rock-face above the cavern’s mouth. I am told that it is bad form to name climbs after individuals; but I am unwilling to relinquish the title of “Puttrell’s Progress” that has been bestowed on this particular piece of work. Mr. J. W. Puttrell, as every reader of this journal knows, is a capable and daring cragsman. It is more to the point here to mention that he is the discoverer of Wharncliffe Crags as climbing-ground, and that he has not only wrought mighty deeds there himself, but has been the preceptor of various pupils, good, bad and indifferent. This hand-traverse is at present his monopoly, and is one of the most sensational climbs to be found at the Crags. The difficulties do not end with the traverse, for the ascent to the top of the rock involves some awkward balancing on small ledges that slope downwards. [1]

With your left hand on the big layaway, right hand on the finger jug, left foot on a polished foot hold and right foot on rugosities, do the first 15 feet or so of Minus 10 to a pointy jug in one move. The grade seems to be as dependent on your favourite colour as much as the amount of power you possess. Somewhere between 6b and impossible seems about right. [1]
