Cole was a Southern Californian who started climbing locally and was an early developer of Joshua Tree. Often in tandem with Steve Grossman he established a number of hard new aid routes on El Capitan in the early 1980s. Cole was particularly adept at slab climbing which lead to an interest in developing better climbing shoes. The result was stealth rubber and the 5.10 company which he led until selling to Adidas in 2011.
