David Smith, a chartered engineer, was in the 1960 Yorkshire Ramblers' Club party that bottomed the main shaft of Reyfad in Northern Ireland, completed the Munros in 1994 and led the club's Alpine meets from 1986; he was hut warden, secretary and president (1976–78) of the club and an honorary member.
