A Glasgow JMCS climber, he proposed and led the building of the Meagaidh Hut, made the first ascent of The Pumpkin on Creag Meagaidh in 1968, and climbed Zero and Point Five Gullies on Ben Nevis. He was Custodian of the CIC Hut 1967-1980 and Huts Convenor 1980-1998, overseeing the building of the Raeburn and Naismith huts; he was made an Honorary Member in 1977, served as Vice-President (the obituary gives 1985 to 1987), and became an Honorary Vice-President in 2004.
