A shipyard draughtsman from Gourock and central figure of the 'Greenock Team', he was part of the team that put up Arran routes such as The Blinder, The Rake and Armadillo, and the first winter ascent of Nuis Chimney with Jim Crawford. He joined the SMC in 1969, co-wrote the 1979 Arran Climbers' Guide, was elected Vice-President in 1978 and became President on the death of Bob Elton, and was made an Honorary Vice-President in 2012.
