Glasgow town councillor from 1945, later a bailie and in 1952 Senior Magistrate of the city, and chairman of the Scottish Orchestra's executive committee. He joined the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1931, helped Macphee check routes for the Ben Nevis guide, climbed the Matterhorn, served on the Committee from 1945 to 1948 and was a Vice-President from 1953 to 1955.
