Dundee man who served in the Black Watch in the First World War (MBE), became an Honorary Sheriff Substitute in 1916 and received an honorary LLD from St Andrews in 1957. He was a founder member of the Scottish Ski Club and first Honorary President of the Grampian Club (1931-1936), joined the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1908, served on the Committee from 1915 to 1919 and was a Vice-President from 1939 to 1945.
