Polar explorer and geologist who sailed with Shackleton's Endurance expedition in 1914, made the first ascent of the Beerenberg on Jan Mayen in 1921 and of Petermann Peak in East Greenland in 1929, and became Master of St John's College, Cambridge in 1952. He joined the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1912 and in 1936 proposed the purchase of the Dalness Forest for the National Trust. [1] [2]
