Born at Husabost in Skye, Alexander Nicolson was a scholar, Gaelic poet and advocate (1860) who served as Sheriff-Substitute of Kirkcudbright (1872-1885) and then at Greenock until 1889. He made many ascents in the Cuillin of Skye, some of them new, and Sgurr Alasdair is named after him; he was elected a Vice-President of the Scottish Mountaineering Club in December 1892, a month before his death.
