William Douglas joined the Scottish Mountaineering Club in December 1890, contributed over fifty articles and notes to its Journal and edited it for eighteen years. He climbed between 1895 and 1912 in Switzerland, the Dolomites, France, Italy, the Canadian Rockies, Norway and the Jura, including a traverse of the Meije, and the great boulder at the foot of the Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis is the Club's memorial to him.
