In the 1930s Bill Mackenzie led the group climbing new and harder routes in summer and winter, mostly in Glen Coe, on Ben Nevis and in the Cuillin of Skye, and he joined the SMC in 1937; during the war his climbing and ski-ing experience led to service with Special Forces in mountain warfare training. He wrote the 1958 climbers' guide The Cuillin of Skye, was the first president of the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, and was elected President of the SMC in 1966. [1]
