Educated at Merchiston Castle School, he went into the family carpet-manufacturing business and was chairman of the Paisley Trustee Savings Bank in 1931-32. He joined the SMC in 1919, was Vice-President from 1939 to 1946 and President from 1950 to 1952, was elected Honorary President in 1959, and for many years sang the Club song at the annual dinner.
