Neil Mather was a textile technologist who trained and worked at the Shirley Institute, and a member of the 1955 British expedition that made the first ascent of Kangchenjunga, where he helped set up the top camp. He climbed widely in the Alps, ran fell races and helped introduce orienteering to Ireland. He was the Rucksack Club's outdoor organiser and a vice-president in 1991, and died in December 2005.
