Alan Deane was an actuary, a good rock climber and a strong walker. He became the Rucksack Club's outdoor organiser within two years of joining and was known for his careful records. In 1937 he climbed in the Lofoten Islands, including an ascent of Stedtind and the first British traverse of Strandaatind. After the war he joined the civil service in London, was secretary of the London Section from 1956 to 1961, and died on 8 January 1977. [1]
