Fred Heardman was a moorland walker who fought on the Somme with the Manchester Pals and later ran the Church Hotel and the Nag's Head Inn in Edale, where he set up the first information centre in the Peak District. He inaugurated the Colne-Rowsley walk in 1926 by covering 73 miles in 24 hours, took part in many mountain rescues, and was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1960. He joined the Rucksack Club in 1922, was hut warden at Tal y Braich, and died at Edale in May 1973. [1]
