Arthur E. Burns co-founded the Rucksack Club in 1902 with J. H. Entwisle, after the two wrote a letter to the Manchester City News, and they became its first joint secretaries. He was a strong walker in the northern Pennines, climbed in Switzerland in 1914, 1924 and 1926, and visited the Lofoten Islands. He held the secretaryship for forty years and later resigned his membership after a rift in the club during the war. [1]
