Ted Courtenay joined the Rucksack Club in 1951, having started mountaineering through the YMCA Rambling Club. He was chief engineer at Manchester University for many years. He was on the 1955 Rolwaling Himalaya expedition, which made numerous first ascents, made the first continuous 120-mile walk from Tan Hill to the Cat and Fiddle, and crossed the Greenland ice cap on Nansen's route in his presidential year.
