Alex Ferguson was born in Fallowfield and worked in textile testing, becoming deputy head of textiles at the Manchester Chamber of Commerce Testing House. He joined the Rucksack Club in 1943 and was a strong rock climber, making the third ascent of Bow-shaped Slab on Clogwyn Du'r Arddu and leading Central Buttress on Scafell. He was vice-president in 1974 and 1980 and president in 1978. [1]
