Eric Byrom was a bank clerk from Altrincham who climbed with Douglas Milner, did the classic gritstone, Welsh and Lake District routes and climbed the Matterhorn six times. He was honorary secretary of the Rucksack Club for 29 years (1942-1971) and its president in 1974-75. He later chaired the finance committee of the British Mountaineering Council and became its vice-president. [1]
