Joe Walmsley was from Salford and worked as a mechanical engineer at Metro Vickers and later in the nuclear power industry. He led the 1957 Masherbrum expedition, which reached a high point a few hundred feet below the summit, and the 1961 British-Nepali expedition that made the first ascent of Nuptse. He was president of the Rucksack Club in 1966-67 and president of the British Mountaineering Council in 1979-82. [1]
