Herbert Hartley was a chemist who invented the adhesive for the wartime 'sticky' anti-tank bomb and developed foamed polyurethane insulation. With Maurice Linnell he made many first ascents in the Pennines, and later, with Albert Hargreaves and Roy Horsman, he made new climbs in North Wales, the Lake District and Scotland. He was president of the Rucksack Club in 1954 and 1955 and secretary of the Mountain Rescue Committee from 1956 to 1980, and he died in Maryland, USA. [1]
