John Hirst founded the electrical contracting firm Hirst, Ibbetson & Taylor and joined the Rucksack Club in 1918. He was best known for his climbing songs and parodies; he compiled Songs of the Mountaineers (1922), a collection of climbers' songs, and in 1959 printed a volume of his own songs, and with his wife completed the Munros after the Second World War. He was president of the club from 1944 and an honorary member from 1955. [1]
