Firth Burton joined the Rucksack Club in 1921, served on its committee for 31 years, was its president for three wartime years from 1940 and edited the Journal in 1945 and 1946. He was a noted mountain photographer, ran annual Alpine meets for the club, took part in the first ascent of the East Buttress of Clogwyn Du'r Arddu, and in 1926 made the first Colne to Rowsley walk with Fred Heardman and Harold Gerrard.
