Joseph Collier was a surgeon (F.R.C.S.) and a leading rock climber of the early 1890s, making Collier's Chimney in Moss Ghyll, Collier's Climb on Scafell and the complete ascent of Piers Ghyll in 1892-93. He joined the Alpine Club in 1893, climbed widely in the Tirol and Dolomites and visited the Caucasus in 1894. His remarks at a Yorkshire Ramblers' Club dinner prompted the founding of the Rucksack Club, and he was its president when he died in October 1905. [1]
