Velvet Silence E6 Solo | onsight Between 1st Feb 1986 and 26th Apr 1986
First ascent.

Climbed onsight solo in spring 1986.

I was on my [way] back to London with some of the NLMC we stopped off at Black Rock, because they wanted to do Demon Rib. I wandered around the corner and noticed the runnel. Couldn’t resist trying to get on it. Once on it I noticed what I thought were old brush marks, so started padding up them. When I was about half way up the other lads appeared and asked what it was. I said I had no idea and wasn't sure if there were actually any holds higher up. Mark Lynden ran to the top with a rope just in case. Well there were enough luckily. A week or so later I made a note in the book at Stoney to say I’d done it but didn't know if it was new or not. A while later John Allen told me I'd done the first ascent of Velvet Silence, he'd probably had his eye on it. I had no idea what he was talking about, so he explained what he knew about it. I never claimed it, graded or named it but I did at least actually climb it.[1]

Prior to Regan’s ascent Jonny Woodward had apparently told John Allen he had done it, perhaps as a wind-up. The claim was later retracted. [2]

Moon Crack E5 Solo | worked 1976

I led the second ascent of Moon Walk shortly after John put it up. Sometime later mid- week there were a load of us on Curbar trying Moon Crack but didn't get very far so we moved on to Froggatt where I ended up doing the second ascent of Hairless Heart. The following Saturday we went to Froggatt again and I soloed most of the Extremes and then went on to Curbar, I kept soloing and ended up at Moon Crack I thought I might as well have a look and just kept going. I remember starting up the top bit and having to reverse because I'd jammed my hand so hard in the horizontal it was stuck. Anyway I was buzzing so much when I got to the top I ran to the bottom and without really thinking I started up Moon Walk. I got to just below the top standing in the pocket and my arms gave out, I couldn't make the last pull and my leg started to get the old sewing machine leg. I remembered there being a bit of an edge somewhere back from the top so I just leapt and somehow got it. I didn't solo anything else for the rest of the day. It was a great day but I still think about if I'd failed to grab that edge. [1]
