Mancunian rock climber predominantly active in the 1920s and 1930s. Despite a shrapnel injury to his hand doing the first world war which nearly resulted in amputation he became a strong and forceful first ascentionist most notably on Peak District Gritstone and Cloggy. He went on to establish the (Mountain) First Aid Committee which became the Mountain Rescue Committee and was awarded an OBE in 1964 for his services to mountain rescue in the UK.
