That day, when I reached the crux of the route, an overhanging section 30 meters above the ground, I felt tired. I was completely exhausted. All my muscles seemed useless. I turned around to see the place where I was going to crash and die, convinced that my hands would give way. I felt no fear; I was simply lucid. I hesitated, knowing that the only thing I could do was go upwards, even if it meant falling into the void, and then something incomprehensible happened. Everything became fluid, simple, all fatigue faded away, giving way to extreme concentration, perfection of movement.

I then thought that I had never understood anything about climbing, that I had everything to learn, that training wasn't the only secret, that the mind produced a power I hadn't suspected. I was no longer the same; at the top of the route, I was in a state of contemplation, of serenity. I stayed up there for maybe two hours, letting my thoughts wander. It was a friend who, not seeing me return, became worried and pulled me from my reverie. [2, translated]

[Antoine Le Menestrel](/climber/657/antoine-le-menestrel):
> You etched climbing in to our culture, you brought climbing up to an art form. You lived climbing, it was your lifestyle, I was still a student, looking on. I loved to watch you climb, your suppleness passed over in to my body. [1]
[Lynn Hill](/climber/555/lynn-hill):
> Patrick will always have a place in my heart and memories. The times I spent eating dinner at his house, laughing, working together for "Rock and Wall" magazine, and climbing on the beautiful cliffs of Southern France were precious moments of life. Being from the same generation, I was inspired by Patrick's visionary achievements when he came to the States and on-sighted many of the hardest routes in the country. [1]
[Jerry Moffatt](/climber/131/jerry-moffatt):
> A memory which stands out was when he took me out in his new HF Lancia Integral. He was a great driver and after warming up the engine went absolutely flat out! However at no time did I feel scared. Such was his charisma, he had an aura of total confidence and control. [1]
